This week I am away at college! I am in the midst of the National Trust Careership, a three-year scheme designed to give chaps like me a leg up in the world of horticulture. The majority of our time is spent gaining work experience at our properties, but five times a year we go off to college to gain practical knowledge. Ten trainee gardeners are taken on each year, and also ten trainee rangers who focus on countryside management. Each student is taken on by the individual garden, and aside from Hidcote the gardens that took on a trainee for my year are Blickling, Chartwell, Clumber Park, Dunham Massey, Kingston Lacy, Powis Castle, Rowallane, Scotney Castle & Trengwainton. Next year's Careership is just being advertised, and the new roles can be found on the National Trust jobs page.
